![]() I really need to get back to this place, the Santa Rosa Plateau with her rolling hills and lovely oaks. As Don and Kyle noted, the trees are playing host to what I also believe is a parasitical plant. I think it is mistletoe, and a perusal of the Wiki entry on mistletoe makes it seem very likely. My updated title is a bit dramatic as Wikipedia tells me that an infestation rarely causes death. Moreover, mistletoe infestation is actually a boon to biodiversity, especially for birds species which use it as a food source and nest in it. Anyway, I'd like to be there today, to see these trees in leaf, but here in So. Ca. we're being urged to stay inside today due to our heat wave and the fires. Hopefully, they'll get a handle on the fires in the San Gorgonio Wilderness and Joshua Tree today. They are two of the best places in this part of the state, boyhood haunts that need revisiting, but I guess life will be really hard on the wildlife for a few years. Taken 02/20/06.
